The Remembering: Find Me Again
On an ordinary night in Nairobi, before the accident, Ayanna asks her husband whether he would still love her if she forgot him.
Nairobi, a rainy night, dinner half-finished and a record playing low. Ayanna finds a childhood photograph of herself and admits she cannot remember the day it was taken. Everyone tells her who the girl in the picture was, but she cannot feel her. The conversation drifts from photographs to marriage, and then she asks Marcus the question. If she forgot everything about them, would he still know her, and would he love her enough to let her be whoever she became? He wants to say he would fight for her and bring every memory back. She is asking something else. He finally says he would love her without making her owe him the memory. They dance in the kitchen. They take a new photo. It prints, and Ayanna writes on the back: find me again. None of this is dramatic. That is what makes it the night they will both be fighting to get back to.
She asked him before she forgot. He answered before he knew the cost.
